## Verdict

Wirecutter's tested top pick for durability and speed, and the fastest mainstream-recommended drive here. Sustained-load heat, flagged by Notebookcheck, is the one long-term question mark that keeps it off the top spot.

## For

- Wirecutter's top pick after testing 24 portable SSDs, for the best mix of affordability, speed, and durability
- Delivers on its USB4 performance promises per ServeTheHome
- Speedy and highly portable, and works as a phone companion
- Measured USB4 speeds of up to 4GB/s read and 3.6GB/s write, faster than many early NVMe SSDs
- Wirecutter says larger-capacity drives like it are worth the investment for regularly storing large files

## Against

- Runs hot under sustained loads
- High heat development
- Premium position

## Frequently asked questions

### Who is the Corsair EX400U for?

The Corsair EX400U is for people who need a lot of space, up to 4 TB, without paying flagship money. The research found proven endurance in RTINGS tests, NVMe-class USB 3.2 speed and a 3-year warranty, and recorded no cons. If speed matters more than capacity, the Samsung T9 at the top of our board is the faster drive. Do not be tempted by the cheaper high-capacity Samsung T5 EVO, which is in F tier for its slow QLC design.

### How long does the Corsair EX400U last?

The research cited proven endurance in RTINGS tests and a 3-year warranty, and found nothing to count against it. That is why it ranks fourth on our board. As with any SSD, keep a second copy of anything you cannot replace.

### Is the Corsair EX400U good for gaming?

Yes. Its NVMe-class speed over USB 3.2 loads PC game libraries quickly, and 4 TB holds a large library. On a PS5 or Xbox it can store games and play last-generation titles directly. Current-generation console games must be moved back to internal storage to run, which is true of every external drive.

### Does the Corsair EX400U need a USB4 port?

No. It works on any USB-C port and on USB-A with an adapter. It reaches its highest speed on a USB4 or Thunderbolt port and runs at the port's speed on slower connections. Plug it into the fastest port your computer has.

### How should I format the Corsair EX400U?

Use exFAT if it moves between a Windows PC, a Mac and a console, because all of them read and write it. Use NTFS on Windows only or APFS on Mac only for better handling of very large files and permissions. Formatting erases the drive, so copy files off first.

## What this tier means

- A: Excellent. Strongly recommended, beaten only by the very best.

## How to read this

- Each category is researched in four independent runs, one per lens (expert consensus, value, reliability, community pulse). Every run ranks a board of candidates that deliberately includes products buyers cross-shop but should avoid. Placements score on a ranked ladder (LP), and tiers are derived from LP, so no tier is ever assigned by hand.
- LP is this product's points on its own category ladder. It is comparable within a category and not across categories.
- Link status reports what our pre-publication link check found when it fetched the cited URL. It says nothing about the quality of the review.
- A citation with no usable link is listed rather than dropped, and is excluded from the counted total above.
